Tournament of Classics 2017

For those readers new to the Bluestocking Salon, Bas Bleu’s Tournament of Classics is our annual tribute to college basketball’s March Madness™, in which we pit literary classics against one another in a “big dance” to victory. In years past, your favorite classic novels, children’s stories, mysteries/thrillers, and literary villains jockeyed for the grand prize. This year, the tournament belongs to the women, as sixteen beloved and unforgettable literary heroines face off. (Click on bracket to enlarge.)

Now, we believe there is room for every one of these women on a bluestocking’s bookshelves. And for good reason: They are by turns smart, stubborn, courageous, funny, and not without their flaws…in short, real women. But in this competition, only one can claim the prize, and it’s up to you to decide which of the Sweet Sixteen contenders will advance to the Elite Eight. Cast your votes below by clicking the button next to your character choice, then clicking “Vote.” We’ll announce the winners of each round on Facebook and on this blog and let you know when it’s time to vote again.

Now for the fine print, aka rules and disclaimers:

  1. We run a clean game here, folks: no stuffing the ballot box, no insulting the voters or players, and no bribing the judges with anything other than the highest-quality chocolate and champagne.
  1. These competitors were chosen by unscientific popular opinion, not sales or statistics, from books that have achieved “classic” status; we hope you’ll take it in stride if your favorite protagonist didn’t earn a seed. Of course we always welcome reading suggestions in the comments!
  1. Alas, there are not great riches to be won here. At least, none beyond bragging rights and fantastic reading suggestions. But a bluestocking’s “To Read” list is worth its weight in gold!

Let the games begin!

  4. Love it. Sad when you know you are backing a potential loser, but I’ve occasionally done that in march madness also.

  5. Fun selections…doing something like this really makes you think about these characters–sometimes hard choices so it’s challenging. It would also be fun to do a non-fiction list of real women like first ladies, suffragists, authors etc.
