To the London Book Fair and Beyond!

Colin Firth was kind enough to join AG for tea in the Jane Austen Centre’s Regency Tea Room.

Every year, Bas Bleu’s editors travel to book and gift trade shows, meeting with publishers and merchandise vendors to see their latest and greatest offerings, so that we can select the best of the best for our customers. For the past few years, editor AG has attended the annual London Book Fair to check out the British publishing scene…and to do a little sightseeing. This year’s trip turned into a bit of a literary tour! She recently returned from her adventure across the pond and agreed to share some of the highlights with us in the Bluestocking Salon. Literary Charleston

Wherever you live, it’s a good bet your heart has been in Charleston, South Carolina, over these past few days. And whether you have personal ties to the city or you only visited that one summer years ago, there’s no denying it is a unique and complex place.

Because we’re book people and because we’ve been talking a lot about Charleston in the Bas Bleu office this week, we’ve drawn up a short (and not at all comprehensive) list of some of the writers who have—for better or for worse—immortalized the coastal city and the surrounding Lowcountry in their writings. Some of these authors are life-long Charlestonians; others are transplants “from off” (as the locals say) who succumbed to the Holy City’s charms. All reflect the powerful storytelling tradition that is a hallmark of Southern literature, and many incorporate the creole language and culture of the region’s Gullah people. Continue reading

Cooking the Books: Sangria Prawns

From time to time, Bas Bleu’s editorial staff “samples” recipes from cookbooks and other culinary guides found in our catalog. Our efforts are amateur at best: If you’re looking for advanced epicurean know-how or glossy food photography, you’re about to be disappointed. We’re humble home cooks, you see, like (most of) you—pressed for time, with non-matching cookware and the tendency to scatter flour everywhere. But we know delicious when we taste it, and if you try your hand at these recipes we think you’ll agree!

If you’re like us, you are destined, most weeks of the year, to be an armchair traveler, exploring exotic locales and cultures in the pages of your favorite books. Cookbooks serve as particularly excellent literary “passports,” and Tori Haschka’s A Suitcase and a Spatulain which the Australian-born food and travel writer shares her favorite recipes from around the world—is no exception. Soundtrack for Summer Reading

Summer is just around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: road trip! Of course you’ll need plenty of reading material to keep you company in the car, on the beach, by the lake, or in the hammock.
